October 22 | Charleston Arts Festival FINALE at The Old City Jail

As the reincarnation of Charleston’s ten-season JAIL BREAK events, which were both showcases and celebrations of local talent, CAF brought its inaugural finale event back to the Old City Jail. In addition to extravagant exhibitions of art and photography, the event included comedy artists, poetry readings, and local artisans.  The superstar musical bill on the outdoor stage included local performers, Futurebirds, The High Divers, Jordan Igoe, and Matadero.  Presented inside the Jail was a dazzling projected light and music spectacle by New York City-based Myth of an Atom.

October 27 – Origin: A Culinary Evolution at High Wire Distilling Company

In an innovative melding of multiple creative genres, Origin: A Culinary Evolution spotlighted James Beard Award-winning chef, Jason Stanhope of FIG and his culinary delights, complemented by original music, modern movement, and spoken word.  Jayce McConnell, head bartender at Edmunds’ Oast, devised an elaborate array of specialty drinks to partner with Stanhope’s cuisine.

Within the open warehouse-brewing room at High Wire Distilling Company, the professionals at Ooh! Events crafted beautiful open seating from which attendees were able to relish an evolution-themed performance in three distinct movements:  Ocean, Land, and Fire.  This performance component featured original dance choreographed by Sara Cart Sumner and performed by five dancers from her Movement Union, a prose accompaniment by Marcus Amaker, narrated stirringly by Joy Vandervort-Cobb, and a stunning original score composed and directed by CAF co-founder, Andrew Walker.

Dubbed “magical” by the Post & Courier’s Hanna Raskin in her year-end culinary review for 2016, Origin: A Culinary Evolution certainly proved to be a beautiful and affecting marriage of cuisine and art.
